Skin Biopsy
Procedure
A skin biopsy is a minor procedure used to help diagnose various skin conditions, including rashes, infections, and suspected skin cancers. It involves taking a small sample of skin, which is then examined under a microscope by a specialist laboratory.
We perform skin biopsies in a calm, private clinical setting. The procedure is quick, usually requires only local anaesthetic, and is carefully explained beforehand so you know what to expect.
What to Expect at the Clinic:
- On arrival, you’ll be welcomed by our receptionist and asked to complete a brief Medical History form
- Our Specialist Doctors will meet with you to review your skin concern, explain why a biopsy may be needed, and answer any questions you may have
- The area will be numbed with local anaesthetic before the biopsy sample is taken
- A small dressing will be applied to protect the area, and you’ll receive written aftercare instructions to follow at home
- A follow-up appointment will be scheduled (usually within two weeks) to review your healing and discuss the biopsy results
Depending on the location and type of concern, different biopsy techniques may be used—such as punch biopsy, shave biopsy, or excisional biopsy. Our Specialist Doctors will select the most appropriate method based on your individual case.

FAQ's
What is a skin biopsy used for?
Skin biopsies help diagnose conditions such as skin cancer, persistent rashes, infections, and other unexplained skin changes.
Is the procedure painful?
No. A local anaesthetic is used to numb the area, so the procedure itself is usually painless. You may feel a brief sting from the anaesthetic injection.
How long is the recovery time?
Most people heal within 1 to 2 weeks. The area may be slightly sore or scabbed during this time, but discomfort is usually minimal.
When will I receive my results?
Biopsy results typically arrive within a few days to a week. We’ll schedule a review to discuss the findings with you in person.
What do I need to do after the biopsy?
You’ll be given clear aftercare instructions to reduce the risk of infection and promote proper healing.
What happens if the biopsy finds something abnormal?
If a condition is diagnosed, Our Specialist Doctors will explain the results clearly and recommend appropriate treatment or referral as needed.
