We offer you:

  • Oral Contraceptive Pill (OCP)
  • Insertion and removal of the Implant – Nexplanon
  • Insertion and removal of the coil – Copper Coil, Mirena, Jaydess, Kyleena
  • Fitting, removal and checking of caps, diaphragms, IUDs and IUSs
  • Contraception injection – Depo Provera

We are committed to maintaining access to Family Planning & Sexual Health care during the COVID 19 crisis. In addition to implementing social distancing measures in the clinic and offering tele health consultations where practical, you will be treated by Doctors in full PPE.

The oral contraceptive pill (OCP)  is the most common contraception method for women in the UK, and when taken correctly, is 99% effective.
The hormones in the pill prevent the ovaries from releasing an egg during ovulation, and makes it difficult for the sperm to reach the egg.
The pill is not just used as contraception, it can also treat heavy periods, irregular periods, painful periods, premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and endometriosis.

The contraceptive pill is taken every day for 21 days, with a 7-day gap in between the next set of pills, allowing for a monthly period. The pill does not protect against STIs, so it is advised to also use a condom.

There are a variety of contraceptive injections:

  • Noristerat (lasts for 8 weeks)
  • Depo-Provera (lasts for 12 weeks)Depo-Provera-Contraceptive-injectionSayana-Press-Contraceptive-injection
  • Sayana Press (lasts for 13 weeks)

The injections contain progestogen, which thickens the mucus this the cervix, stopping the sperm reaching the egg. It can also prevent the releasing of an egg.

This method is 99% effective, and lasts from 8-13 weeks so you do not have to think about it every day or when you have sex. This contraceptive method does not protect against STIs, so we advise to use an additional form of contraception, such as a condom.

There are a variety of Contraceptive Coils

IUD (Intra Uterine Device – Coil) – Copper Coil

An IUD is a small anchor-shaped plastic device which is inserted into the womb and releases copper. The coil works by stopping the sperm and the egg surviving in the womb or fallopian Mirena-Jaydess-Kyleenatubes. The IUD is a long-lasting reversible contraception method; it works for 5-10 years. Once in place, you do not have to think about it each day or every time you have sex.

IUS (Intra Uterine System – Hormonal Coil) – Mirena | Jaydess | Kyleena

mirena-kyleena

IUS is a small, T-shaped plastic device, similar t o IUD, that’s put into your womb. It releases the hormone progestogen to stop you getting pregnant and lasts for 3 to 5 years, depending on the brand.

Coils are 99% effective, and work as soon as they are ins
erted. It can be removed at any time by a medical professional, and you will soon return to normal fertility levels.

Coils do not protect you against STI’s, so it is advisable that you also use another form of contraception, such as a condom when engaging in intercourse.

The contraceptive implant, Nexplanon, is a small tube, around 4cm long, which is inserted under the skin of the arm. The implant stops the ovaries releasing an egg, by slowly releasing progestogen into the body. This also thickens the womb lining, resulting in difficulty for the sperm to reach the egg.Nexplanon-implant

This form of contraception lasts for 3 years. This method is 99% effective but is not an effective method in protecting against STIs, so it is advised to still practice safe sex. This is a useful method for women who do not want to get pregnant for a while.

The contraceptive cap is a circular dome made of soft, thin silicone or latex. The cap is inserted into the vagina before intercourse and covers the cervix. This works by stopping the sperm reaching the womb. Along with the cap, you should use spermicide, which kills the sperm.
The cap should be left inside the vagina for 6 hours after sex. The caps are reusable once washed.

The contraceptive cap is 92-96% effective, but also provides limited protection against STIs. It is still advised to use another form of contraception when engaging in sex.
